How to Use This Site

Welcome!

You will find a wealth of information on this site about international adoption (also known as transnational adoption or intercountry adoption). The articles are organized into two main sections: Choosing International Adoption and Raising an Internationally Adopted Child.

Choosing International Adoption has information that may be especially helpful to people who are new to international adoption or who are in the process of adopting a child. It includes articles on choosing international adoption, health issues, ethical and legal issues in adoption, connections with first/birth families, adopting older children, forms and documents, country-specific information, and information on the Hague Convention on Inter-Country Adoption. One special feature is a table that compares the most common and emerging countries of interest for international adoption. Many people find this table helpful when trying to decide what countries to consider.

Raising an Internationally Adopted Child  provides information about how to create a smooth transition when you bring your child home, signs to watch for attachment problems, and strategies for fostering secure attachment in your child. It also includes information about topics such as ethnic and racial identity, parenting adopted children, grief, and family dynamics. This information is vital for your child’s well-being and for reducing adoption disruptions/dissolutions.

In addition to these two main sections, there is also emergency information for when you are traveling abroad to adopt a child, helpful links, and a discussion forum. You can navigate through the site by clicking on the main menu at the left hand side of your screen or using the tabs at the top of your screen.

Best wishes.
